  12. While I was chatting to some friends last night about this, I just
  13. happened to look at the date, and something stirred in the back of my
  14. mind.

  16. It's April, nearly two years from the exact date the C= crash became
  17. common knowledge, and very nearly 12 months since the Escom deal was
  18. done. We all know that initially all Escom wanted was the C= tradmarks
  19. etc, and that's what they thought they'd got. Then they're told,
  20. "Sorry, if you want the name, you have to buy the lot, including this
  21. Amiga thing they make, oh, and it'll cost you another 11M" Escom go
  22. away and think about it, and decide it's worth it. The sticky point
  23. is, not only do they have to agree to take the whole lot, and pay
  24. more, but they aren't allowed to sell off the Amiga bit for 12 months.

  26. So they keep it for 12 months, make lots of noises, spend a bit of
  27. cash getting it back on it's feet, setting up production, keeping the
  28. market going, until someone comes along who is interested in making
  29. something out of what exists, say a set-top box or suchlike, and sell
  30. it for a little profit, having held onto the bit they wanted.

  32. I can't really say I'm convinced about the suggestion that Viscorp
  33. will continue support for current and future developments, the 1200
  34. and 4000 should be okay, at least as far as spare parts etc go as
  35. Viscorp can probably make a bit selling these, and I suppose it
  36. explains the Walker's slightly odd case and the even odder mention of
  37. 1MB chip ram (yes, I know it was only a prototype, but it makes some 
  38. sense now), a set top box doesn't need to run more than one screen
  39. and certainly not at a particularly high res.

  41. I hate to say it, but if this goes through and I'm right about the
  42. lack of need for Viscorp to finance development, then it's the end for
  43. those of us who wanted a machine which was truely versatile and not
  44. completely lumbered by backwards compatibility.

  46. If I'm wrong (and I hope I am) I'll stick with it, but as far as it
  47. looks now, I'm worried that might not be the case.
